After finishing college, I decided to go with some friends of mine back packing across Europe and like all recent graduates of my generation, we were willing to stay at the inexpensive youth hostels, eat meagerly to support our tabs for drinking down beers, and at times, sleep at the train stations as needs be. It was a wonderful experience doing this in your early twenty’s and something that I will cherish through out my life. As a family man, with three kids and an adventurous wife who loves to travel more than I do, we decided to take on a European vacation last summer. Starting off our travels in Paris reaching to parts of Spain, Germany, Switzerland and Italy and eventually heading off to the United Kingdom where we would spend ten days with a childhood friend of mine and his family on their holiday. Of course it seemed difficult to do the backpacking experience with my family so we decided to opt for a more leisurely mode. We checked into family type hotels that were not that hard to find, especially with the internet. Then, we would rent vans if possible, and do our own tours. We had to contend with maps, and sometimes different road signs that may or may have not been present in the map. Conversing with locals, especially in France, Italy and Germany presented to be a worthwhile challenge with the end result being the quick guide step to sign language or sign signals, if that is indeed a correct term. And at the end of day, we would end up back in the hotel room, exhausted and tired, but laughing about our interesting experiences of the day. All in all, that part of the trip was a learning experience of traveling with the family and not necessarily a leisurely vacation

Upon entering the United Kingdom, I was surprised by my friend that we were going on a land trip around the area and would be using a Motorhome. We were able to lease a motorhome at the Bridgend Motorhome, Caravan and Leisure Park and I must say that it was one of the most pleasant times I have had in all my travels. The people who owned the Bridgend Motorhome, Caravan and Leisure Park were very amiable and pleasant. It’s a family run business and those working were either relatives or long time employees of the company. In fact, it was a throwback of sorts for me to experience the service of the Bridgend Motorhome, Caravan and Leisure Park for it reminded me of how business was conducted when I was a teenager accompanying my dad when he talked to his clients, most of whom ran family owned business. At the Bridgend Motorhome, Caravan and Leisure Park, everything was done personally. There was this warmth and genuine feeling that they truly cared for you, not because you were the customer but you were the guest, and you were their friend. They even invited us for a family dinner at our last night there where they told us their history of the company and had some of their nieces and nephews play with our kids. They are one company that I would never forget soon.

Bridgend Motorhome, Caravan and Leisure Park will take care of our traveling needs, Europe trip will surely be a blast!

Before babies learn to speak, their only effective way of expressing themselves is through pointing, crying and screaming. If they are not understood this only gets louder leading to a frustrated parent and baby. Babies have the ability to interpret and understand what we are saying to them long before their vocal chords are developed enough to form words. They are also very capable of knowing what they want and need by about six months of age.

When we are able to respond to our children’s needs through effective communication, we provide them with a sense of security and a feeling of being understood. The earlier we provide them with this, the more content they will be. Babies copy us from as early as 6 weeks old by mimicking our facial expressions. You can see your baby intently watching and copying as you interact with them. As you play with your child, watch their facial expressions. As you are interacting with your baby you will notice that their eyes light up, they may make funny facial expressions, they may even poke their tongue back at you. Most rewarding is when they offer you a smile or chuckle. This is the earliest form of communication and is an essential part of bonding with your baby.

Each parent has their own way of interpreting what their child needs and most often this is done through trial and error. I spoke recently with a friend who said that each time their baby cried they changed the diaper, fed and burped her, played with her and finished it all off with a bath. Not knowing what their baby was crying for they just covered all the bases! They even did this at all hours of the night. I guess the baby was so exhausted by that ritual that she fell asleep! This feeling of incompetence is something we as parents can all relate to. If only we could understand their needs much earlier before they could speak.

Speech requires a complicated sequence of events to occur; it is much more difficult to accomplish than the usual babbling we hear from new babies. It requires specific tongue movements matched with specific lip movements and the development of tiny muscles in the throat and trained vocal chords before it all comes together. The natural progression from using body language before speech is often likened to crawling before walking.

Nine Tips to Curb Whining!

Every child whines sometimes, but for most parents, a whiney voice is really hard to listen to. Here are some creative tips for reducing whining at your house.

There are 4 Common Reasons Why Kids Whine:

1) There’s an Underlying/Unmet Need. Your child may be hungry, tired or hurt.

2) There’s an Underlying Emotion. Your child may be feeling bored, sad, left out or frustrated.

3) It’s a Developmental Issue. Language skills are still developing from ages 2-5, so your child may not have the vocabulary to express the problem.

4)     Manipulation. Your child wants what s/he wants when s/he wants it!! Your child will use whining as a way to wear you down and gain control of the outcome.

So how do you get your child to stop whining? Here are 9 options for you to choose from.

Option 1. The most direct route is to say, “You’re using a whining voice right now and that hurts my ears. I’ll answer you when you use your normal voice.”  Ignore the child’s requests until s/he uses a “normal” voice.

Option 2. You can record a child’s voice when he’s whining and play it back to him or just have him “pretend” to whine while recording it so he can hear how it sounds. The child usually gets a chuckle out of it. Give the whiney voice a name, like “Whimpy”. Then when your child whines, you can say, “Uh oh, Whimpy’s here.  I’ve lost Ken. Do you know where Ken is? Ken, Ken come out, wherever you are!”

Option 3. Kids are prone to whine when they’re tired, bored or hungry. See if your child has one of those needs and address the need.

Option 4. Kids are also more prone to whining when their vocabulary is limited. Try to provide words for your child that she may not have yet. i.e. “You wish that you could swim longer because you’re having so much fun that you don’t want to leave?!

Option 5. You can role play with puppets during a quiet time. Have your child be the parent and you can be the child. Act out a scene where the child wants an extra dessert and use an irritating whiney voice.  Ask the child how s/he felt listening to a whiney voice and what the parent should do to stop the child from using a whiney voice. Your child may surprise you with an inventive answer!

Option 6. You can tell the child that if he wants to use a whiney voice, he can use it in his room, but not where you are.

Option 7. There’s a children’s song (Maybe the Wiggles sing it?) that has lyrics like “I’m gonna shake, shake, shake my sillies out. Shake. Shake. Shake my sillies out. Wiggle my waggles away. ” You can make up a song with your child like “I’m gonna stomp, stomp, stomp my whineys out. Stomp. Stomp. Stomp my whineys out. Wiggle my waggles away.” Sing it with your child when she uses a whiney voice. Or if you have an older child, develop a rap song together.

Option 8. Come up with a hand signal or “sign language” that signals to your child to stop using a whiney voice. This can be particularly helpful when you have company and don’t want to directly reprimand your child in front of others.

Option 9. If you think that frustration, boredom, sadness or some other emotion may be the root cause of the whining, help the child identify the feeling. i.e. “I was wondering if you were feeling kind of frustrated right now?”

Pick on or two strategies to try and consistently use them until you get the results you hope for.
